“To conjure music into existence, musicians surrender themselves to the musical structures, their bodies, their brains, their movements. From here, the power of music also spreads to the bodies of those who expose themselves to the sound, penetrating and forcing its way through ears, eyes, skin. In this way, music shapes thoughts and bodies, sinks into the world of the subconscious, where form and structure are shipwrecked and sink to the bottom as fragments, illuminated only now and then by the light of fluorescent jellyfish.”
Composer Huihui Cheng works with "theatrically expanded compositions" by exploring the visual forms of music and giving theatrical meaning to sound to enhance the expressive potential of music. In 2019 Huihui Cheng collaborated with choreographer Yves Ytier to create the twenty-minute piece "Calling Sirens for choreographed piano trio and dance” for uBu.
